Scotland’s Exceptional Landscape -
A Landscape for Living |
|
|
| |
This event for MSPs announced the winner of an MSP’s landscape competition. They were asked to identify which landscape best sums up the richness, diversity and distinctiveness of Scotland’s environment. As well as awarding the winning prize, the gathering affords the opportunity for MSP’s to discuss informally how Scotland can better care for landscape across the country.

‘A Scottish Marine Bill - What future for Scotland’s seas?
plus short film |
|
|
| |
The forthcoming Scottish Marine Bill is a unique opportunity to shape the future of Scotland’s seas. But what measures are needed in the Bill to better coordinate and manage activities at sea, and safeguard our marine wildlife, resources and coastal communities for the future?
The event included a first view of the 3-minute film ‘Save our seas’, by Scottish Environment LINK.

Get Active, Keep Active!
Planning for healthy sustainable communities |
|
|
| |
Society conspires against choosing active travel; out-of-town shopping centres, inadequate public transport and more and more money spent on roads rather than investment in healthier more sustainable modes of transport. At the same time, Scotland is facing an inactivity and obesity crisis, while traffic and congestion increasingly impact on our quality of life.
Learn how solid, on-going investment in planning and designing for active travel, such as creating comprehensive path networks in, around and between our communities, can help bring about significant change in the way we travel today.
We also looked at using personalised travel planning and other innovative promotion campaigns to deliver positive changes in attitudes, highlight alternatives and deliver a real shift away from driving towards sustainable travel.
Organised jointly by the Ramblers Association and Sustrans. For more information please contact Helen Todd at the Ramblers Association, helen.todd@ramblers.org.uk or Petra Staats at Sustrans, Petra.Staats@sustrans.org.uk

“Making the best use of rural development funding” |
|
|
| |
The new Scottish Rural Development Programme (SRDP) is due to be launched early in 2008, bringing £1.6 billion of rural development funding to Scotland over the next 6 years. Farmers, crofters and other rural residents can apply for funding to achieve a range of environmental, social and economic benefits for rural Scotland. An entirely new way of delivering this funding, Rural Development Contracts, will be launched, and for the first time focus will be on outcomes and regional priorities.
How can the benefits be maximised, and the best possible use be made of this important programme? A series of case study examples showed what can be done, and what it can achieve for biodiversity, landscape, access, tourism, and cultural heritage, at the same time as providing an important source of income for those in rural areas. |
