The Small blue is our smallest butterfly, but quite feisty! It tends to live in small colonies, where males set up territories, perching on tall grass. Its sole food plant is Kidney vetch.
Action Needed
1. Help protect brownfield sites that are important for the Small blue.
2. Encourage the protection and management of ‘unimproved’ grassland.
3. Ensure the Scottish Biodiversity Strategy is fully implemented.
Threats
Loss of coastal and ‘unimproved’ grassland, and loss of ‘brownfield’ sites such as old railway lines.
