Public perception of the state of nature: "Within your lifetime, do you think the state of Scotland's natural environment has improved or worsened?"

Opinion polling shows that people are much more likely to think that the state of Scotland’s natural environment has worsened (44%) than improved (16%) in their lifetime. 

This is a more negative perception than in 2022, when 39% of people in Scotland thought the natural environment had worsened and 19% believed it had improved.

2022 poll was conducted between 31st October – 6th November 2022 with a sample size of 1033. 

2026 poll was conducted between 5th August –10th August 2026 with a sample size of 1007.
