Public Body Scottish Forestry

Policy Area Native woodland creation

Scottish Forestry provide data on native woodland creation in the private sector (outside of the Forestry and Land Scotland estate).

The level of native woodland creation varies significantly year by year. The 20 year trend shows an increase in native woodland planting in area terms, but a decline in native woodland as a proportion of overall planting. This decline has begun to reverse in most recent years, with native woodland making up 50% of planting in 2023/24 and 61% in 2024/25. Over the past 20 years, native woodland planting has totalled over 70k hectares, accounting for 51% of private sector woodland creation planting.
