A small, stocky snake characterised by a zig-zag or diamond pattern along its back. Rarely grows more than 60cm. In males, the zig-zag is black and in females it is brown; juveniles are brownish or sometimes ginger in colour. Found on heaths, moors, coastal areas and woodland edges, the adder is our only venomous snake. They are still widespread in Scotland but, in many areas, populations are declining.
