Proportion of Marine Protected Areas with fisheries management measures in place.
Marine Protected Areas are areas of the sea designated for protection from damage caused by human activities. These were designated to protect seabed habitats, marine wildlife like seabirds, whales and dolphins, and the fish and shellfish species on which coastal communities rely.
Most of these areas were designated in 2014. But in 2026 many of our inshore marine protected areas – those within 12 nautical miles of the shore – still don’t have fishing restrictions in place to give them real protection.
