The Scottish Government has pledged to meet the international commitment of protecting 30% of land and sea for nature by 2030, known as 30 by 30.

NatureScot count all formally protected sites (SSSIs, SPAs, SACs, Ramsar sites) as well as new Nature30 sites (a voluntary designation without legal status) towards this target. Not all protected sites are effectively managed and some are in poor ecological condition. NatureScot acknowledge this and produce a separate figure for the area covered by effectively managed sites.

The data below shows that the current pace of designation is too slow to reach the 30% target by 2030. Closing the gap will require significant levels of new designations over the coming years. The distinction between “contributing” land and “effectively managed” land is also important to making 30 by 30 meaningful.
