Number of land management agreements and land management orders in place since 2024.
NatureScot can enter into a land management agreement, which involves payments to a land manager to conduct a programme of work, usually on a protected site. Where a land manager refuses to enter into a management agreement, NatureScot have legal powers to introduce a compulsory Land Management Order.
Over the past three years there have been hundreds of management agreements in place, but no use of land management orders. The largest share of land management agreements relate to Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs). A high amount of agreements in place between 2024 and 2026 have related to management of geese and sea eagles.
