Monitoring of sewer overflows

Proportion of sewage overflows which are monitored.

Public Body Scottish Water

Policy Area Sewage overflows

Discharge from sewer overflows causes pollution in our rivers and seas, posing risks to both public health and the environment. Monitoring of overflows is essential to ensure the public are informed of discharges and any risks to their health.

The data shows a positive upward trend in monitoring of overflows over the past 3 years, albeit from an extremely low starting point of 6.7% in 2023 to 49.6% in 2025. This leaves just over half of overflows unmonitored in the most recent data available.
