Nature Protection Scorecard

Monitoring of protected sites

Proportion of protected sites which have been monitored in previous 5 years.

Public Body NatureScot

Policy Area Protected sites

NatureScot are responsible for site condition monitoring on protected sites. Monitoring allows the public to know whether the designated features (the species, habitats or geological formation for which a site has been protected) are being protected effectively.

The data shows a downwards trend over the previous 5 years with monitoring being conducted on a smaller proportion of sites. The data below shows both visits for monitoring and status checks, where observations are recorded from a site visit without full monitoring. In 2025, 54 sites were monitored, representing 2.94% of the network, a decrease from 97 sites, or 5.27%, in 2021.
