SEPA Ecology staff conduct monitoring of ecological indicators of water quality. The data shows that monitoring of lochs in particular is poor, with only 14 of Scotland’s 334 lochs visited by SEPA Ecology in 2025. Monitoring levels of rivers are higher, with a quarter of rivers visited in 2025.
There have been modest increases in monitoring levels of both rivers and lochs over the past 3 years.
