Refresh Scotland’s Geodiversity Charter, raising awareness of the role of geodiversity in the delivery of valuable geosystem services that serve the needs of biodiversity conservation and restoration.
Objective 6: Take action on the indirect drivers of biodiversity loss
Priority Action 28. Engage and strengthen the connection between people and communities with nature.
The refreshed Scotland’s Geodiversity Charter (2025–2030) was published on 1 July 2025. It sets out a framework for recognising and promoting the value of geodiversity and its role in supporting ecosystem function and nature recovery.
The Charter highlights how geodiversity underpins biodiversity conservation and restoration through “geosystem services” such as soil formation, water regulation, landscape stability, and habitat creation. It also supports awareness-raising and collaboration across organisations involved in geoconservation, planning, and land management.
The Charter supports ecological outcomes indirectly by improving understanding of how geodiversity contributes to ecosystem function and biodiversity restoration, including soil processes, hydrology, and landscape-scale resilience.
Its contribution is primarily through guidance, awareness, and integration into land-use and conservation planning, rather than direct ecological intervention. Benefits depend on uptake within planning, conservation practice, and land management decisions.
Develop a communication and engagement programme to raise awareness and understanding of the importance of biodiversity and its links to climate change and the changes needed to ensure a just transition to a net zero and nature-positive Scotland.
Increase public connection and action for nature through expanding the reach of the Make Space for Nature campaign and develop a national nature volunteer and citizen science frameworks.
Encourage people’s connection to nature through local green spaces and other land managed for nature, supporting capacity-building projects.
