Progress delivery of the outdoor learning elements of the Learning for Sustainability Action Plan, including nature connectedness and learning, to meet Target 2030 so that every 3-16 place of education becomes a Sustainable Learning Setting.
Objective 6: Take action on the indirect drivers of biodiversity loss
Priority Action 29. Embed biodiversity and nature in curriculum development.
Progress on outdoor learning is being delivered through the Learning for Sustainability (LfS) Action Plan, which sets the expectation that all 3–16 education settings become Sustainable Learning Settings by 2030.
Outdoor learning and nature connection are embedded within Curriculum for Excellence, supported by Education Scotland guidance and practitioner resources rather than a standalone national programme.
Delivery is therefore through curriculum guidance and school-level implementation, with no single national delivery mechanism or reporting framework evidencing uptake across all schools.
LfS embeds nature connection and outdoor learning in education policy. Education Scotland guidance supports integration into teaching practice, but there is no published evidence of consistent national uptake or outcomes. Contribution to biodiversity is indirect, through influencing awareness and long-term behaviour rather than delivering measurable ecological change.
