Delivery Update May 2026

Opportunities are being explored to strengthen Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) nature-based learning resources through integration with the developing Learning for Sustainability (LfS) portal. This includes preparing new materials on nature, biodiversity, and nature-based solutions to support teaching and learning across school settings.

Education Scotland’s existing CfE guidance already includes outdoor learning and sustainability resources, which provide the basis for further development and consolidation within the new LfS portal. These resources are used by practitioners to embed nature-based learning within curriculum delivery rather than as a separate subject area.

Work therefore focuses on updating and aligning existing educational resources rather than introducing a wholly new curriculum component.

Ecological Contribution

Nature-based learning resources support ecological outcomes indirectly by improving environmental literacy, understanding of biodiversity, and awareness of nature-based solutions among learners.

Evidence from Education Scotland’s Learning for Sustainability framework indicates that embedding outdoor and nature-based learning can contribute to long-term behaviour change and nature stewardship, though impacts are gradual and dependent on implementation consistency across schools.
