Promote the Nature Networks toolbox containing resources such as guidance, case studies, and mapping tools, which will support local authorities and land managers in delivering for, and contributing to, Nature Networks.
Objective 2: Protect nature on land and at sea, across and beyond Protected Areas
Priority Action 11. Identify, expand and enhance Nature Networks and ecological connectivity
The Nature Networks toolbox, hosted through Nature Networks Scotland, provides guidance, case studies and supporting tools intended to help Local Authorities and land managers design and deliver connected habitats in line with the Nature Networks Framework and NPF4 requirements.
It is designed to support practical implementation by translating national policy into usable resources for planning, mapping and local decision-making. This includes examples of emerging Nature Network approaches and learning from early adopters.
Engagement activity, including events such as “Breathing Life into Nature Networks”, has helped raise awareness and share early practice among stakeholders. However, uptake of the toolbox in formal planning and land management processes appears uneven. There is limited evidence that the resources are being applied consistently across Local Authorities or systematically embedded in decision-making or delivery on the ground.
While the toolbox supports capacity building and knowledge sharing, its direct influence on measurable habitat connectivity outcomes remains unclear at this stage.
The Nature Networks toolbox supports delivery of habitat connectivity and restoration by providing guidance, mapping tools and case studies to help translate policy into practical action. These resources help identify priority areas for habitat creation and linkage, supporting ecological networks that enable species movement and improve ecosystem resilience at landscape scale. However, ecological outcomes depend on uptake and application by Local Authorities and land managers, and on sufficient capacity and funding to implement actions identified through these tools. Overall, the toolbox provides an important enabling function, but biodiversity benefits depend on consistent use and delivery on the ground.

Ensure spatially defined Nature Networks are being implemented in every Local Authority area to provide connectivity between important places for biodiversity, deliver local priorities and contribute to strategic priorities at local, regional and national scales.
Undertake mapping of opportunities for creating Local Authority wide Nature Networks that connect locally important areas for biodiversity, provide linkages with 30 by 30 sites, and address local and regional priorities for climate and nature.
